WASHINGTON STATE HISTORY MUSEUM INTRODUCES GUESTS TO FOLK ART TRADITIONS
WITH OUR HANDS: World Folk Art Festival April 17 & 18
TACOMA-February 1- The second annual folk art celebration by the
Washington State History Museum and the
Washington State Arts Commission
(WSAC) is coming to downtown Tacoma beginning this month.
Opening February 20, the exhibit
WITH OUR HANDS: Folk Art Treasures
features folk art items pulled out of the Historical Society's collection, such as jewelry made
out of hair, a picture frame crafted from matchsticks, a handmade Norwegian violin inlaid with
mother-of-pearl, and more. Guests will also get a sneak peek at the kind of art that will be
demonstrated at the WITH OUR HANDS: World Folk Art Festival, April 17-18, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
WITH OUR HANDS: World Folk Art Festival
will feature art demonstrations from Pacific Northwest master folk artists. Among some of
the traditional folk art guests are invited to learn will be Latvian embroidery, Ukrainian egg
decorating, Guatemalan back strap weaving, Mexican garment seam stressing, Norwegian painting
called Rosemaling, Yakama bead working, Vietnamese paper folding and much more. Musical
performances will take place throughout the weekend.
WITH OUR HANDS: World Folk Art of Washington is funded by the
National Endowment for the Arts,
KUOW,
and The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation.
The exhibit is organized by the Washington State History Museum and the Washington State Arts
Commission.

HOURS- Wednesday–Friday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., with extended hours and FREE
admission every third Thursday of the month from 2-8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
ADMISSION- $8 for adults; $7 for seniors, age 60
and above; $6 for students and military with valid ID; children, age 5 and below, and members are always
FREE.
