History Boxes

Our History Box collection consists of five diversely themed boxes offering relevant and useful educational materials. Initial development was done by students at Gig Harbor High School through the WSHS Museum School program. These ninth-grade students did topical research, developed lesson plans, and selected or made many of the things in the boxes. All of the boxes contain a teacher notebook with suggested uses and activities.

Coast Salish History Box: Resource book, maps, native raw materials, wild woman mask, basket, wool weavings, photographs and children’s books.

Ring of Fire: The Volcanoes of Washington State History Box. For more information about this History Box, download a PDF file.

Journey of Lewis and Clark: Resource books, journal page reproductions, trade goods, tin cup, powder horn, quill pen, peace & friendship medals, portraits, video, and a class contribution journal.

Frontier Towns: Maps, newspapers, photographs, land claim papers, resource books, cookbook, washboard, iron, quilt patch, candles and candle mold, period toys, and tools.

Makah Culture: Maps, native raw materials, model canoe, rattle, basket, children's book, photographs, and hand-carved cedar puppet.

History Boxes are available through the Education Department for a fee of $25 for one week or $35 for two weeks. Reservations can be made months ahead by calling Joan Martin at 253/798-5876. Someone must come to the museum to pick up the box and return it. Staff is available seven days a week.
