Lewis and Clark—"Voyage of Discovery" Orienteering Journal Class
Inspired by the journals of the Lewis & Clark expedition, this class will teach easy steps in the basic techniques of orienteering with a compass, in small groups, to special observation points around the museum property. Each student will produce a journal containing a map, written observations of the local flora and fauna and botanical drawings. Student groups will start their exploration with special expedition gear and clues, to lead them on their voyage of discovery. Students will learn how to navigate their expedition using a compass and map. Working in small groups with unique assignments, students will use the maps to lead them to specific points on the museum grounds in order to observe the native plants and surroundings. Once they have reached their final destination and made measurements and observations, students will make their way back to the Coach House to begin their journals. Artist Nora Walsh will teach students how to construct individual journals, document and record their observations, and illustrate their journals with botanical images of the flora and drawings of the fauna. Student journals will consist of drawings of the animals, birds and the native gardens and their overall view of the environment. *Teachers, please note this art class can become messy and while we provide smocks students should be encouraged to wear art-class clothes. |
If you like to figure things out for yourself, orienteering is your game. It's like a road rally or scavenger hunt, but you don't need a car to complete it. All you need is a map, compass, curiosity and common sense.
