Washington State History Research
Start digging into the rich history of Washington State with these helpful resources.
- Washington State Historical Society – Okay, we’re biased because this is the home of Washington History Day, but check it out: a half-million photographs, 80,000 artifacts. That’s what 118 years of collecting gets you, and a lot of it is online.
- Access Washington – The home page of Washington State government, with links to agencies, statistics, and much more
- Center for Columbia River History – CCRH promotes the study of Columbia River Basin history; check their website for links to a variety of sources
- Center for Pacific Northwest Studies – Housed at Western Washington University, the Center holds a variety of primary sources on the Pacific Northwest, including some digitized
- Center for the Study of the Pacific Northwest - The University of Washington’s home page for PNW history, it includes a changing showcase, links and Pacific Northwest Quarterly articles
- Densho: The Japanese-American Legacy Project – A digital archive of video oral histories of Japanese-Americans incarcerated or interned during World War II
- HistoryLink - The encyclopedia of Washington state history, it’s an excellent source for secondary sources and bibliographic references with a wide array of topics
- Karpeles Manuscript Library, Tacoma Museum - Large collection of original documents, many of which are available online
- National Archives-Pacific Alaska Region – The Seattle branch of the National Archives houses extensive federal government and genealogy records, and its helpful staff provides excellent support to History Day students
- Northwest Digital Archives – A collection of online finding aids for primary sources in the Pacific Northwest, including Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.
- Pacific Northwest Historians Guild – An association for anyone interested in PNW history; its website includes members’ research interests. This is a good resource for finding experts on your topic!
- Repositories of Primary Sources – A killer site maintained by the University of Idaho Library Special Collections, this is a portal to more than 5,000 primary source websites.
- Seattle Municipal Archives - Seattle city government records, including many digital
- Seattle Public Library - Seattle History Collection - Wide-ranging collection of Seattle history
- National Archives-Pacific Alaska Region – The Seattle branch of the National Archives houses extensive federal government and genealogy records, and its helpful staff provides excellent support to History Day students
- Tacoma Public Library - Special Collections – Extensive collection of Tacoma history
- University of Washington Special Collections - A major resource for rare and archival materials about Pacific Northwest history, including many digitized items
- University of Washington Libraries-History Day Research - A page designed especially for Washington History Day students, this will help you navigate the extensive collections at the UW
- Washington State Digital Archives - The nation’s first archives specifically dedicated to preserving electronic records from state and local government, it’s searchable online
- Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center - Extensive holdings in Holocaust history, as well as primary source materials
- Washington State Library - Varied collections of materials about state government, including a selection of digitized historic newspapers, maps and books, as well as oral histories and much more
- Washington State Archives - The records of Washington State government, including all the governors, legislatures, courts, and more, held in six repositories. State archivists love History Day!
- Washington State Legacy Project – Links to profiles of prominent Washingtonians, plus photos and interviews.
- Washington State University - Special Collections - A major resource for rare and archival materials about Pacific Northwest history, including many digitized items
- Washington Women’s History Consortium - Online portal to resources related to Washington women’s history at eight partner institutions in Washington State; includes primary sources online
