Teacher Programs

General Information and Schedule

Whether you're just starting out as an educator or if you've taught for years, the Washington State History Museum has opportunities for enrichment and continuing education all year long! Check out the workshops and special events listed below to find out how you can use museum resources in your classroom.

Pre-Service Programs

Workshops

Museum staff will bring information about state history and museum programming to your classroom. We will discuss resources available and introduce history and social studies integration.

History Day workshops are coming soon! REGISTER EARLY AS SPACE IS LIMITED!

Experienced and prospective teachers alike will benefit from the annual History Day teacher workshops, offered at three sites statewide. The workshops provide educators the tools to successfully implement History Day in the classroom, project preparation, source analysis, research resources and more.

For educators new to Washington History Day, our teacher workshops are a great way to learn not only the basics of the program, but also the key elements in creating a History Day project and how History Day meets Washington State Classroom Based Assessment requirements. You will together in small groups to complete a typical exhibit board that will shared with everyone at the end of the day.

More experienced teachers will have an opportunity to work in groups to produce their own exhibits using secondary and primary sources to research and interpret topics related to the 2011 theme of Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures and Consequences, including Water Rights at the Ellensburg workshop, the Development and Legacy of the Port of Seattle at the Bellevue Workshop, and Fisheries and Fishing Rights at the Bellingham workshop.

Earn FREE clock hours and enjoy a free lunch while learning new techniques and connecting with other teachers.

Choose your workshop and email Mark Vessey at mvessey@wshs.wa.gov to register! Space is limited and registration is required.
